Eligibility Criteria

Must be a citizen of India or Nepal, Bhutan, Tibetan Refugee who arrived in India before 1st January 1962 with the intention of permanently settling in India.

Must be a person of Indian origin who migrated from Pakistan, Burma, Sri Lanka, East African countries of Kenya, Uganda, the United Republic of Tanzania (formerly Tanganyika and Zanzibar), Zambia, Malawi, Zaire, Ethiopia, or Vietnam with the intention of permanently settling in India.

However, candidates falling under categories (ii), (iii), (iv), and (v) above must possess a certificate of eligibility issued by the Government of India.

Educational qualifications

Holding a high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) high school equivalency certificate is required.

Experience

Possessing a minimum of one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician is necessary.

Work experience is evaluated based on a 40-hour workweek, with part-time experience being credited proportionally. For instance, working 20 hours per week for two months will be considered equivalent to one month of experience. No additional credit is given for overtime hours.

Physical Ability

 The position entails meeting and consistently maintaining certain physical demands, which will be assessed based on physical abilities. These requirements include, but are not limited to, the following:

Agility: You must possess the physical agility to squat and bend comfortably.

Lifting: The ability to repeatedly lift and handle baggage, containers, and other objects weighing approximately 50 pounds, as part of security processing, is necessary.

Endurance: You should be capable of walking up to three (3) miles during a shift and standing for extended periods, which may last up to 4 hours.

Responsibilities

As part of their responsibilities, Transportation Security Officers (TSOs) must comply with the Personal Appearance Standard, which mandates a neat, clean, and professional appearance while on duty or in uniform. This standard includes adherence to policies regarding accessories and grooming.

For instance, except for 1/4 inch stud-type earrings, body and/or tongue piercings should not be visible to the public. Additionally, any tattoos on the head, face, and exposed areas of the neck must be covered at all times and not visible to the general public. To cover tattoos on the lower neck, TSOs may utilize TSA-issued and approved items such as turtlenecks or dickies.

Maintaining a professional appearance is crucial to upholding the standards of the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) and ensuring a positive and professional interaction with the traveling public.

Important Points

To be eligible for the SV-D pay band, which is equivalent to the GS-5/6 level, you must meet one of the following qualification requirements (A or B):

A. Experience: Possess a minimum of one year of full-time work experience in the security industry, aviation screening, or as an X-ray technician.

OR

B. Education: Hold a high school diploma, General Educational Development (GED), High School Equivalency Test (HiSET), or Test Assessing Secondary Completion (TASC) high school equivalency certificate.

When assessing experience, credit is given based on a 40-hour workweek. Part-time experience is credited proportionally. For instance, working 20 hours per week for two months will be considered equivalent to one month of experience. Overtime does not provide additional credit.

It is important to note that national service experience, including volunteer work, is also considered. This includes both paid and unpaid experience through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (including professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, and social). Volunteer work contributes to the development of critical competencies, knowledge, and skills, providing valuable training and experience that directly translates to paid employment. All qualifying experience, including volunteer experience, will be taken into account.

Meeting these qualifications will determine your eligibility for the SV-D pay band and recognize the valuable experience gained through both paid and volunteer work.

The Human Resources Office requires authorization from the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) for employment offers extended to current or former political appointees. To meet specific security mission and same gender pat-down job-related requirements, the Transportation Security Administration (TSA) may apply a hiring preference based on gender (male or female) when filling Transportation Security Officer (TSO) positions. In airport locations where the application of the hiring preference is deemed necessary, candidates of the required gender will be given priority in the scheduling of the computer-based aptitude test, airport assessments, processing, and selection stages.
